Air Conditioner Theft Guards
This expensive unit turned into junk
The sale of copper and aluminum has become a money maker.... it didn't take thieves long to figure out where to score these materials. Air conditioning units are full of copper and aluminum. What once was an isolated problem is now an epidemic nation wide..... for this reason, we began offering custom made theft deterrent guards for industrial , residential and commercial applications.
Police suggest that, even though you cannot stop a determined thief with tools, you can make your unit a harder target so he goes on to an easier target. Motion detectors are always a good idea as well. Our theft guards can be made to fit your unit and the pad it sits on. They are also lockable and can be easily removed for repairs by a service technician. Installation is simple...position the unit guard as desired, mark the holes, remove the guard, drill the holes and bolt the unit down as one assembly. Install the pin at the desired height, or install a lock in one leg, or in each leg if you desire. (A long shank padlock is required. We recommend getting a keyed alike set and locking two opposite corners.) The guard is finished in red oxide primer. Top coat in your choice of color is optional at $35.00 additional charge. The above shown unit fits a pad 36" or larger. Other sizes available upon request.
We also make larger guards to fit multiple units.
Above is an example of a multiple unit guard. We came out to the site, took measurements and built to suit. This set of a/c's were replaced twice before we installed the guard. It has four leg sockets. We locked two legs and pinned two legs. It is welded to a leg pad that was concreted into the ground. After the units were stolen the first time, our customer had someone build a chain link cage around the units... snip snip snip...gone again. We took that down and installed our Theft Deterrent Guard... when our customer saw it, he said, and I quote in an email he sent me, " I rode by this weekend and took a look at the unit. Wow. If those SOB's steal them again, I guess they deserve it." ( attesting to his thoughts of how hard they would have to work to get at them now). This guard removes as one unit and is locked on two legs.
For larger units too heavy to move, thieves usually just disassemble them where they are and take the pieces out of them. They will cut the lines, pry off the panels and chop the copper and aluminum out of them, and be on their merry way. Even though the bigger units take longer, they are usually out back or on a roof where people are not as apt to watch. This makes them easy targets. The biggest worry is that these units can cost many thousands of dollars, and many times take many people and expensive equipment like cranes to install. Chances are, even companies with guards don't have cameras in some of these areas... so the thieves are free to take their time and get all they want.
