Cable Railing Systems

Meminger Hall, Charleston SC. Installing cable railing in diagonal runs on frame installed by others to be used to allow jasmine to vine over the front of the building.

This deck, called a wetdeck is actually a part of the roof. The cable rail system allows use of this extra space.  A pool deck is far less confining with cable railing, and it looks much more nautical.
This balcony was constructed using stainless steel posts and intermedaites with an IPE  These two balconies are shown to display the almost invisible look of a cable rail system. It has an IPE top caprail.
Change in elevation? No problem. This job used galvanized cabling to protect a lake.  Our crew traveled over a 100 miles to this jobsite. We installed the posts, cabling, and copper caps.
Stainless steel cable railing materials cut and ready to ship to a jobsite per templated dimensions.  Safety with beauty. The two tiered cable system in no way obstructs the view of the fountain.  Typical wood post with copper cap. Most customers want 4x4 posts, this one wanted 6x6
Table top display showing swivel fittings and cable rail attached to stainless steel posts as in a stairway area.   Home-Design show held 01/07. A cable rail mock-up with an IPE top rail cap. Stainless steel end posts using a variety of end fittings.
A cable railing installed on a small porch. Shown are two end posts and an intermediate post which controls cable spacing. IPE wood top rail cap.   Shown is a stairway and landing cable railing system. Notice how the end posts are drilled two ways, or are used to change directions.
Here we see a typical stainless steel turnbuckle. This is the tensioning device that makes the whole system work. Each cable must have one.   This view shows a view through a cable rail system and how it does not obstruct the scenic Atlantic Ocean background.
This image shows how a cable rail can be used even on the smallest decks. This balcony view gives a good idea how non obstructive the system is.   This picture shows a face mounted swivel fitting which allows the cable to angle for stair ways and inclines. The fitting is attached by drilling and tapping mounting holes.
Safety and beauty too. A beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly no obstruction impedes the view for the resident.   Shown are the intermediate post arrangement and top rail cap. Notice that cable spacing is closer than typical iron and aluminum railings because of the elasticity of the wire. (cable installed 3
A deck view showing the porch and stairway and how they interact with the cable railing and IPE top cap.   A typical corner post. Face mounted on one side and through drilled for threaded end terminals on the other side.
This railing was installed on the interior and blocked a dangerous opening without obstructing the view.

Some suggestions when considering cable railing systems.
Stainless Steel Cable Railing System
Cable railing systems offer unique advantages over other handrail types. Not only do they do the job of providing safety to the individual, they are the least visible of all the types of railing that can be utilized. Decorative iron, aluminum, and wooden railing systems also have that old familiar 'stick' look whereas the cable rail system is sleek. Stainless steel posts and hardware were used, but the cable system can be also attached to properly mounted wood posts and other types of support. Always talk to your installer before planning this type of system. There are many things that have to be accomplished during construction before the first cable is strung. Also, the posts and attachment points must be of a type and size approved by the manufacturer to ensure compatibility and optimum performance. The first two pictures above show our displayed railing samples at the Charleston Home Design Show held 01/26/2007. Our cable rail system was displayed in the Charleston Rigging and Marine Hardware Booth on behalf of CS Johnson, the stainless steel cable fitting manufacturer.
